Polypropylene, durable, tough, strong, and able to be cut and fashioned into some very useful shapes (thankfully!) We needed to bring some creative thinking to the tricky problem facing us when our client needed to retain a typical asthma inhaler device inside a PVC ring binder, but it also wanted to be accessible and easily removed for demonstration purposes.
Working closely with the client, we devised a small 500um white polypropylene holster which was capable of holding the device securely, of being fitted into the standard ring binder mechanism, of being completely self-contained and self-closing to keep the inhaler safe from accidental loss, and strong enough not to be torn or spoilt within a few weeks.
As we progressed through the numerous development stages, the design and ease of use became better with every edition we created. Small changes to the locking flaps were instigated to help secure the part together more easily. Little tweaks were done to the shape's profile to allow the inhaler easier access into the holster, until finally, we felt that we had created the perfect shape.
The client's reaction was tremendous, as this had potentially been a costly problem to overcome, with perhaps the only other option being a vacuum formed plastic tray to hold the part in-situ, with all of the resultant costs that inevitably would have incurred. We had proven that by using our expertise to design and construct a clever little holster, which had been totally developed in-house using our digital plotting tables and Studio creativity, we had the ability to truly solve the problem!
Owing to the complex shape, it did however mean that the production quantity had to be produced on one of our four Zund plotting tables, as the cost of the steel knife tooling proved to be very cost prohibitive. Fortunately we were able to offer our tables' run time at a competitive rate, which in this instance allowed the entire order to be successfully completed on time and on budget without the need for a single piece of tooling!
In total we produced 500 pieces of the holster which were fitted inside the accompanying PVC ring binder. The main binder had also been screen printed and welded completely by us too, so we were able to make sure that everything came together correctly. The end result was superb, and everyone from the client to the client's client was very impressed with the simplicity of the EGL solution.
