"An oversize greeting card, which is capable of standing up safely on it own merit". Yet another brief that needed converting from an idea into reality. With a requested size of some 200mm high, the material would need to have sufficient rigidity to stand upright without additional support, but be light enough to make transportation and subsequent positioning trouble-free. The intended site for the card was to be a busy reception area with lots of through traffic, so it was important that the display was capable of remaining in place once positioned.
Choosing to use a 10mm thick aluminium skin lined Kappa product, which offered excellent stiffness and good printability, we looked to see how best to fabricate the flexible hinge part of the design. The card needed to be able to fold shut for delivery purposes, but then be opened to allow it to be stood on display in the reception area of the British Gas Business offices.
Settling on a flexible white PVC strip, which could be glued down the inside joint, the production of the card began to come together. Using the hi-res images and design files that the client supplied we ran the 10mm thick stock through out Cromaprint UV22 print engine. The results were crisp and sharp throughout, with good clean print in all of the solid areas.
Using our large format Zund cutting table to accurately trim the stock to final size the greeting card began to take shape. Assembling the two halves together using the PVC strip took a little time to get right, but when the joint had been prepared and the strip successfully positioned, it was time to stand the giant size card up on its end and admire the result.
With a road journey ahead the finished card needed a suitable packing box constructed to ensure that it arrived undamaged. Not a problem for Evans, who specialise in making sure that the goods get to the destination without mishap. Using heavy gauge corrugated stock a suitable outer was quickly made to order, ensuring the despatch could take place without fuss.
Success! A gigantic greeting card capable of remaining securely upright in position and conveying the look and feel of the corporate image as desired. A delighted client was happy to take delivery of the oversized assemble, and when it was situated in the reception foyer it was seen by hundreds of staff every day (and it never fell over once!) |
