To source a durable sliding rule with screen printed decoration throughout. The item needed to be capable of withstanding constant handling and many months of usage. The print process also wanted to be able to cope with printing cleanly onto a flexible substrate, essential for ensuring clarity of the very small text required to be there by law
The Solution
Utilising a 440um white rigid PVC stock capable of being screen printed, die-cut to size, and heat bent to form the required sleeve shape, Evans Graphics worked to produce a sample which had all of the requisite features. Combining this with a 350um Polypropylene inner component that was also required to be creased in half to provide a double sided insert piece, the desired effect was achieved without the need for glues. The accuracy of the line bending combined with the natural open spring of the polypropylene material made for a perfect combination which provided the necessary slip and grip.
Using UV curing ink techniques, essential for the fine reproduction of 4 and 5 point type, the multi-colour design was successfully reproduced onto the outside face of the PVC. This was then stamped out to final size, including a matching thumb-cut on either side. The outer component was then line bent using a heated table, to allow for the sleeve effect to be created. Using jigs, the accuracy was maintained throughout the entire run of 2000 pieces.
The Result
 A superb slide rule complete with die-cut open windows. To review the content simply move the insert to the correct position. Doctors can now quickly and accurately confirm the correct dosage to be given by simply choosing the weight of the patient and reading off the scale showing in the open windows. A clean and tidy result, with longevity and performance built in.
