When our client asked us to produce a complete Brand Toolkit using no less than four components (five if you count the CD page), the design had not even been formalised. A briefing session was held to bring together the necessary ideas and requirements of the end client, and colour scamps were created shortly after that. The project was to consist of two ring binders, both with different capacity thicknesses, one 23mm box wallet, and one outer container box large enough to take two elements which would contain all of the brand toolkit media.
Fabricated entirely from Priplak Opaline™ White Polypropylene sheet throughout, in either a 800um grade or a 1200um grade, the whole concept was one of clean lines and strong identity. The choice of the brand colours, which were to be screen printed onto the outside surfaces of all of the elements, was inspiring, as the bright pink, lively purple and dark blue stood out tremendously against the clean bright white of the polypropylene. Prototype designs were digitally cut and profiled using our Zund plotter facility. This helps ensure that the design is correct for assembly purposes before committing to hard tooling.
All of the colours were hand matched to an existing litho sample piece, in order to ensure that the brand conformity was maintained throughout the toolkit. This involved the ingenious use of fluorescent tinting gels to give the colour depth and substance. Although the colours were matched spot on, it still meant that the curing time for the UV ink had to be carefully watched, as the gel additive could have easily prevented the ink from curing properly, thereby causing another problem further down the process.
There was not time for any wet proofing of the designs, instead digital proofs were checked and signed off, before production took hold and started producing each of the four designs. With such a short run to produce, more time was spent setting the presses than was actually taken for print time, but this just meant that the printed work had a chance to cool down before the next colour was overprinted! With die-cutting taking place in-house, it was a relatively easy process to move them from one department to another to begin the cutting out. Being such thick stock meant that the creases needed extra special attention to them to make sure that the folds were crisp and clean, no trouble for us, we knew to look out for it!
The entire order was a limited batch of just 50 finished toolkits, which were die-cut to final size (using all new tooling) and then hand assembled to make up the final units. With just hours to spare the completed toolkits were carefully packed and despatched out for the last operation, which was the insertion of all of the litho printed media which in this instance had been handled by the end clients preferred production house.
A successful project completed on time, and to a very high standard in all respects.
