How to fabricate an acrylic sign which could be suspended safely from the pressed steel ceiling plates of the Bank of England? This was the question posed to Evans Graphics when the need arose to identify several service / support desks which were lost in a sea of desks in their busy open plan environment.

The requirement was for the information sign to be hung from the ceiling, but be able to be moved when the relevant desk was relocated somewhere else in the office. Using powerful button magnets which could be fitted into closely machined apertures, the idea for a hanging sign began to come to life. |

Clearly the most important feature of the sign was the ability to remain affixed to the ceiling, and not to come away without good reason. The attraction of the magnets was such that you actually needed two hands to safely break the hold that they have on the steel plate.
Using 5mm clear cast acrylic for the body of the sign, and 10mm opal acrylic for the cap and base sections, the signs were fabricated to give a 100mm square section x 500mm long for the body, plus bevelled edges for the square sections.
Decorated with quality five year life vinyl graphics on all four sides, the signs also needed to be fitted with a diffuser centre panel to avoid too much show through when viewed from up close. The diffusers were manufactured from a 800um frosted finish polypropylene sheet, which allowed a certain amount of light transmission, but not too much that the sign looked dull and lifeless. There were four signs in total over three editions, all clearly able to identify the nature of the desk located underneath the sign.
The packaging turned out to be the trickiest element of the job, with lots of consideration being given to the safety of the acrylic constructions required to be transported to the City. In all a successful project brought to a satisfying conclusion. If you would like to discuss a similar project or anything else a little unusual, then don't hesitate to make contact with us.
